Javier Mariscal and 25th years of the Varius Designed by Oscar Tusquets in 1983 and produced by Bd Barcelona Design since 2003, the Varius chair is a milestone in the contemporary history of Spanish design. It has been a hit with the public and critics alike ever since it first saw the light of day. It is the most widely recognised and best-selling chair, and the one that has best stood the test of time, improving over the years to become one of the new design classics that will be enjoyed by future generations. Oscar Tusquets Blanca (Barcelona, 1941) is an architect by training, designer by adoption, painter by vocation and writer through his desire to make friends. Twenty-five of these friends have generously agreed to pose with his most famous design to celebrate the Varius’ first twenty-five years.

Javier Mariscal is a bit like me: I mean no one’s quite sure whether he’s a graphic designer, an industrial designer or a designer of monuments, whether he’s a painter or an illustrator or a film director or a playwright. What is beyond doubt is that he’s an artist who transmits a terrific joie de vivre, something which is very unusual these days. Javier and Mónica have twins, about two years older than ours. When Eva was on the point of giving birth we visited them to get a practical class in situ. The class was so terrifying that it was just as well we were too late change our minds…
