Varius Auditorio at the Palau de la Música One of the most well-known and unique Modernista buildings in Barcelona, the Palau de la Música was built by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner between 1905 and 1908 as the home of the Orfeó Catalá. Since then, its spectacular concert hall has played host to all kinds of musical performances and has become one of the Catalan capital’s most prized cultural venues. Oscar Tusquets began work on its refurbishment and extension in 1989, and the Petit Palau and the Plaza del Palau were opened in 2004. To coincide with the centenary of the building, 2008 saw the great hall putting on its finery with a new upholstery designed especially for the Varius Auditorio, the seat that has furnished the venue’s stalls in recent years. With its characteristic backrest, the Varius has, in this time, become one of the identity traits of the Palau, to the extent that the Minivarius, the smallest seat in the Varius Family produced by Bd, was born from the need for a smaller seat for the boxes.
