As part of the redesign of the main entrance at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam—one of the world’s leading institutions for contemporary art and design—a new spatial concept was introduced: Fonda Bar and Fonda Café. The project required a furniture solution that would align seamlessly with architect Paul Cournet’s vision and the museum’s strong design heritage. The museum commissioned designer Sabine Marcelis to create her first chair—an iconic, sculptural piece with matching tables—developed and produced by BD Barcelona.
“It was difficult because the chair had to be stackable, lightweight, durable, consciously produced, and recyclable, and it is a new material for me. But I think the biggest challenge was working within all those constraints while still trying to create something with its own character.”
Designed for high-traffic public spaces, the Stedelijk Chair balances visual presence and functionality. Its versatile, stackable structure suits various locations within the museum. Made from 100% aluminium, the chair merges timeless design with sculptural form, and its flowing silhouette complements the museum's smooth white exterior and renovated interiors.
BD Barcelona was responsible for the development and industrialization of this exclusive collection. Working closely with the designer, architect, and museum team, BD ensured a seamless process—from planning and prototyping to production and installation—combining technical precision with full respect for the original vision. A full-service approach tailored to the project, delivering design excellence at every stage
