Ettore Sottsass

Italy

Ettore Sottsass
Ettore Sottsass was born in 1917 in Insbruck. He was a grandee of late 20th-century Italian design, known most notably as the founder of the Memphis collective.
Renowned for his iconic work for Olivetti and beautiful glass and ceramic works, Sottsass is one of Italy’s most influential designers. He is known for his iconic work for Olivetti, glass and ceramic designs, and his bold, geometric, unconventional forms that brought a new light to design.
Before his formation of the Memphis group, Sottsass created the Shiva, an iconic vase emblematic of Sottsass’ and BD’s bright, playful and inspired attitude. He turned from rigidity and formalism towards a creative sensitivity that remains influential today.
