Since 1972, BD has stayed very close to the design process, working from experience and expertise, while keeping an eye out for the future we want to help build. Making sure each stage of the process works towards creating responsibly sourced products for people, the environment, and our territory. For over 50 years, we have collaborated with an extensive network of manufacturers, industrialists and artisans based around Barcelona. Most of our production takes place within a 100 km radius of our headquarters.
Our commitment to local manufacturing has a dual purpose. First, to reduce CO2 emissions from transport. Second, to support local craftsmanship and the industrial ecosystem around us. This proximity allows us to stay involved, understand how things are made and follow each stage of the process more closely.
BD designs objects made to last. Our pieces are built to outlive us, pushing against the short-term, throwaway approach to production. We work with materials that age well and combine traditional techniques with industrial processes to ensure products age gracefully and gain character with use.
We have a restoration and repair program for past and current pieces, offering an extended life to our designs and keeping them out of landfills. This approach is part of a wider shift in how we think about production and consumption, moving towards a more circular economy.
BD holds FSC® certification (FSC-C216213), ensuring that the wood used in selected products comes from responsibly managed forests. This certification applies to a range of pieces in the collection, including the Showtime chair, Chair B, Gaulinetta and Gaulino chair, Jamaica stool with wooden seat, Tout va Bien cabinet, Multileg cabinet, Explorer cabinet and Eclipso shelving and tables.
BD has reintroduced its aluminium profiles as a unified collection, developed with the Norwegian company Hydro, a global aluminium producer, with expertise across the entire material process, from extraction to recycling. The collection is made from 95% recycled aluminium and has one of the lowest carbon footprints in the world. Aluminium has long been part of BD’s material language; this update brings those profiles together and aligns them with current environmental standards, without altering their original character.
